Lesson 10 - A Cartoon WebQuest
A Team or Individual Journey of Discovery!
INTRODUCTION
You or your team is about to set out on an exploration into the history and influences of one of the most popular forms of art ever: The Comic Strip.
What is it that makes a comic strip appealing? Why do some cartoons go away after a short time, while other last past the life of the author?
You or your team will research a comic character or comic artist. You will discover the influences and style went into the character or artist's work, and will create a presentation on what you find.
The final product will be presented to the class, so do your best!

THE TASK
There are TWO tasks
-
You or your team will create an original cartoon character based on the same influences and style as the character or artist which you are studying.
-
This character will become the “star” of a brief, 5 panel "comic strip" (slide show) using PowerPoint. This “comic strip” will tell the story of the artist that you researched.

THE PROCESS
You will follow several steps along the way:
Read ALL these first before you begin your quest!
1. Build Background knowledge by reading and researching one of three artists. If you have another specific artist you would like to use, talk to me privately.
-
Charles Schultz (Charlie Brown, Peanuts)
-
Dr. Seuss (Cat in the Hat)
-
Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (Superman)
Use the links below at the bottom of this section to help your research. Keep track of the websites you use! You will have to write down the web pages you used later!
2. Take notes about your cartoonist’s character or cartoon strip. Some questions to look for...
-
Briefly describe the cartoon's beginnings (or starting point). Include facts about its location, circulation, etc. including the date it first appeared.
-
Briefly describe what things affected the cartoonist or the character. What inspired the creator? Is the character or cartoon strip the result of cultural influences? Is the character based on a famous person? Was there a specific goal in mind?
-
Briefly describe the character's traits and artistic style of the character. What elements of art are used in the development of the character or cartoon strip? What is it about the drawing itself that gives the character a personality?
3. Using what you have learned as a guide, work by yourself or as a team to develop a NEW AND ORIGINAL character for the cartoon strip.
-
Your character should have the same kind of artistic elements as those of your chosen artist's cartoon, but should be a character not seen before.
-
Your character should include a drawing (color, sketched out), a brief biography giving the background of the new character (approximately one full page typed, double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font, one inch margins on all sides), and an electronic version (drawn in Photoshop or scanned) to be used in your PowerPoint presentation.
4. Create a five slide PowerPoint presentation about your cartoonist and his main creation. (Use this sample slide show as your guide.) If you have not used PowerPoint before, please let me know.
-
Include five slides:
-
a title slide
-
a slide describing the origins
-
a slide describing the influences
-
a slide describing the character traits and style
-
a slide with all the websites the information came from
-
-
Your original character should appear in your PowerPoint as the "guide".
5. Cite (list all the websites you got information from) all of your references!
6. You or your team will present your project to the class.
IMPORTANT!
SAVE YOUR WORK TO MOODLE IN YOUR PRIVATE FILE AREA AS YOU WORK!
I Won't give you a break if you lose your work. You are responsible for saving your files. If you work as a team, get your team members loging and password in case they are absent.
Save files to the desktop first, then upload them to Moodle.

EVALUATION
Congratulations! You have just completed a WebQuest! A lot of people find that difficult, a lot of people find it easy.
In a few short paragraphs, write down what you found easy and what you found hard about this process.
How would you improve a WebQuest in the future. What would you do different if you made your own?
Write down who did what if you worked as a team.
