Using Textures in Photoshop - Assignment 2

Create a texture to change the appearance of your skin!

STEP #1
Take and Open Your Picture in PhotoShop

This is going to be the hardest part!

Decide on if you want to take a picture of yourself (a head and shoulders shot) using Photo Booth, or a higher resolution picture (that we can print out later) with your phone or digital camera (the camera you can borrow from me.)

If you use a phone or camera, Transfer your photo to the Desktop. Hit CONTROL + Click and choose OPEN WITH then Photoshop.

Hold CONTROL and click on the layer and choose DUPLICATE LAYER.

STEP #2

Turn the Visibility Off

On the bottom Layer, turn the Visibility OFF by clicking the eye

STEP #3

Take the Color Out

With the Duplicate Layer selected,

go to: Image > Adjustments > Desaturate
or hit: Cmd+Shift+U

STEP #4

Select Your Skin

Get the Magnetic Lasso Tool …

and Select Your Skin.

Finish where you started, and watch for the little icon to change …

Upload to Moodle

Log into Moodle and upload your file from the desktop to Moodle under Lesson 2 Part 2 Assignment 2 - Using Textures.

STEP #6

Texture

Click Here on Google and search for Textures - Marble Sand Rock Brick Flames - whatever, just find something unique.

For best results, find the highest resolution textures you can.

✗ Look at the pixel dimensions in Google for the largest images and you'll know you have the highest resolutions.

When you find your image, choose VIEW IMAGE. Hold the CONTROL button, click the image, and choose COPY IMAGE. Go to your image in Photoshop and choose EDIT>PASTE or COMMAND + V. You should have a new layer on top of your picture layers with the texture on it.

STEP #7

Shrink It Down

Make sure the TEXTURE LAYER is selected.

FIRST, change the OPACITY (how much you can see through it) at the top of the LAYERS PALETTE to about 75%.

If necessary, Zoom Out, hit Command (⌘) +T and shrink down the texture to fit around your head.

Then click the Texture Layer again.

… select the inverse by hitting Command (⌘)+Shift+i again …

STEP #9

Blending Modes

Click on the new texture layer and scroll through the Blending Modes and find one you like …

Try Multiply, Screen or Overlay or whatever you like best …

… and don't be afraid to experiment.
